STATEMENT:
My practice pulls from the interconnected histories of science and mysticism, using materials such as glass, organic media, and aroma molecules to explore the transformative relationships between body, nature, and material. Within this work, the visual, cultural, kinesthetic, and chemical qualities of materials are considered so that they compliment and contrast one another in harmonious tension. These studies give rise to mythopoetic objects, figures, and installations that merge real and imagined material animacies.
Glass serves as both a conceptual foundation and as a central material in my work. Its scientific lineage and associations with preservation, fantasy, and impermanence are woven into sculpture, installation, and assemblage. Themes of metamorphosis, the passage of time, and reaction to environmental stimuli are expressed through glass surfaces mimicking crystallization, condensation, and erosion.
Scent is another essential element within my practice, acting as a bridge between science, fantasy, and memory while deepening the viewer’s sensory and bodily awareness. Drawing on the rich material history of perfume and its ties to glass, chemistry, botany and gender, I combine aroma molecules and plant extractions to create intangible and ephemeral artworks. These evoke spaces, materials, textures, volumes, and layers.
